One day a friend was gathering up metal objects to take in for recycling. I spotted among them a stainless steel ball with a hole bored through the center. It came from a local chemical plant, where it was used as a ball valve. As soon as I saw it I fell in love with it. I said, "You can't let them melt that down, it's a work of art!" Since then, I've used it for several projects. For this one, I dug up an old neon light transformer and made two electrodes out of coat hanger wire. The arc is the result of 10,000 volts of AC current. The reflection of the arc can be seen through the ball's tunnel. 8-point star filter used for effect.
